Address to the Members of CUPE 2974

A Message from your Local President

To the Membership of CUPE Local 2974

For those who don’t know me, my name is James Jovanovic. I have proudly served on the executive in various capacities over the years, including two terms as Sub-Chair for 2974.2, and now two terms as your President, beginning in 2021. I have also worked as a paramedic with Essex-Windsor EMS for over 16 years. From the beginning, I have been committed to standing up for our rights and fighting for the fair treatment of every colleague in the workplace.

It is an honour to serve as your Union President. The significance of this appointment is one that I take very seriously, not in how it affects my own life, but in the responsibility it carries to each of yours. Together with the executive, I am committed to strengthening transparency, communication, and accountability. Our focus is on empowering every member and ensuring that your voices shape the future of this local and the future of your careers.

This union exists to fight for your rights, defend your interests, and create better working conditions for all. Regardless of your local, department, or job status, every member deserves equal representation. Our strength lies in solidarity, standing up for one another and supporting each other at every step.

Every voice matters. Every opinion deserves to be heard. Differing perspectives are not a weakness; they are a strength. Criticism and debate are how we grow stronger together. If you have ideas, concerns, or hopes for the direction of this local, I encourage you to share them. The union is what we make it, and change begins with participation.

Since I first stepped into this role, we have made progress in communication, bargaining, and representation, but the work is ongoing. We continue to adapt, modernize, and expand the ways we connect with members. This website will serve as a growing hub for information, updates, and resources, giving you greater access and stronger tools to stay informed and engaged.

Looking ahead, we will keep pushing for fairness, respect, and recognition in our workplaces. Together, we can achieve stronger contracts, safer conditions, and a more united membership.

Rise together. Stand united. You are the Union.

Thank you.

In solidarity,
James Jovanovic
President, CUPE 2974
